NESBY INDICTED FOR THE FIRST-DEGREE MURDER OF KEESHANNA JACKSON

Joseph A. Cervantez, Jackson County State’s Attorney, announced today that Keavonte T. Nesby, age 22, of Louisville, Kentucky, was indicted on two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm, and one count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon for the death of SIU college student Keeshanna Jackson on August 22, 2021.

State’s Attorney Cervantez presented evidence before a Jackson County Grand Jury that on Sunday, August 22, 2021, Carbondale Police Department received multiple 911 calls of shots fired outside of a large house party located at 501 West Cherry Street in Carbondale, Illinois. A total of four victims suffered gunshot wounds. Jackson, who was a freshman at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, was pronounced deceased at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

Cervantez commended the efforts of the Carbondale Police Department for their continued commitment to this investigation.

Nesby appeared in front of a Jackson County Circuit Judge for a first appearance hearing on September 4, 2024. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 15, 2024.
