Carbondale Man Sentenced for Attempted First Degree Murder
Jackson County State’s Attorney Joseph A. Cervantez announced today that Cody Simon, age 21, of southern Illinois, was sentenced to 14 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for the stabbing of a Carbondale resident.
The Carbondale Police Department responded at approximately 12:07 A.M. on February 21, 2024, to the 900 block of East Park Street for a report of a battery taking place. Officers located a victim with multiple stab wounds. The victim was rushed to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale with serious injuries. Witnesses revealed that Cody Simon had stabbed the victim multiple times during a personal dispute.
Simon was taken into custody later that morning without incident and charged by the Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office with two counts of attempted first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery. Simon’s sentencing range was between 6 and 30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. The State’s Attorney’s Office recommended a sentence of 18 years to the court during an hour-long sentencing hearing. Simon will have to serve 85% of his sentence followed by up to 3 years of mandatory supervised release.
State’s Attorney Cervantez led the prosecution and conducted the sentencing hearing. He thanked his office staff for their hard work. The Carbondale Police Department led the investigation.
