Carbondale Man Guilty of Residential Burglary

Jackson County State’s Attorney Joseph A. Cervantez announced today that George D. Travis, age 60, of southern Illinois, was convicted of residential burglary after a trial in Jackson County.

On April 23, 2024, the Carbondale Police Department was dispatched to 709 Pecan Street, Carbondale, Illinois, in reference to a residential burglary in progress. Upon arrival, officers learned that a safe with numerous personal items had been taken from inside the residence. The owner of the residence arrived home as the suspects were loading the safe into the back of a green pick-up truck and called the police. The owner of the residence was able to relay a partial plate number to dispatch. Carbondale officers were able to locate a vehicle registered to a North Oakland Street address. Upon arrival to that address, officers located the suspect, the dismantled safe, and the missing items inside the defendant’s backpack.

Travis was taken into custody without incident and charged by the Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office with residential burglary and is facing between 4-15 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections with up to two years of mandatory supervised release. A sentencing hearing will be scheduled for later this year.

Assistant State’s Attorney Sophia Allen led the prosecution team. State’s Attorney Cervantez thanked his office staff for their hard work assisting ASA Allen. The Carbondale Police Department led the investigation.
