JUSTIN PERTEET-LOVELADY FOUND GUILTY OF CARBONDALE SHOOTING

Joseph A. Cervantez, Jackson County State’s Attorney, announced today that Justin Perteet-Lovelady, age 18, of Carbondale, Illinois, was found guilty of Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm for a Carbondale shooting that took place on June 21, 2024.

Perteet-Lovelady was found guilty of Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm, following a two-day trial in Jackson County, Illinois, on September 21, 2024.

State’s Attorney Cervantez presented evidence that on Friday, June 21, 2024, Carbondale police responded to reports of shots fired in the area of Springer Street and West Main in Carbondale. They say video showed a man in dark clothing get out of a white vehicle and fire several shots at another vehicle while it drove west on Main Street. The suspect left the area before police arrived. Perteet-Lovelady was arrested on June 24, 2024.

Cervantez explained that the Carbondale Police Department conducted a detailed investigation that ultimately led to the successful prosecution of Justin Perteet-Lovelady. State’s Attorney Cervantez said, “Our local law enforcement officers did an outstanding job from the beginning to ensure a successful prosecution. Neighbors near the shooting all came together and stood-up against the violence. Gun violence will not be tolerated in this close-knit community.”

Perteet-Lovelady will be sentenced soon and will have to serve 85% of his sentence in the Illinois Department of Corrections followed by up to 3 years of mandatory supervised release. Carbondale Police Department led the investigation and State’s Attorney Joseph A. Cervantez conducted the trial.
