MURPHYSBORO — Jackson County State’s Attorney Joseph A. Cervantez announced today that Bobby L. Barnes, age 25 of Marion, Illinois, was sentenced to the Illinois Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm, a Class 1 felony.

The charges arise from an incident that occurred in Carbondale, Illinois, on December 15, 2021, when police officers from the Carbondale Police Department responded to a call of shots being fired in the area of a business on East Main Street. Video surveillance footage shows Barnes walking westbound and firing seven (7) shots in the direction of a vehicle that was located at the intersection of Cedarview and Main Street. Witnesses at the scene advised officers that the shooter and fled into Pyles Fork Creek and had not returned. Officers observed the defendant attempting to hide in the brush near the creek. The suspect was arrested and identified as Bobby L. Barnes.

Barnes was sentenced to serve ten (10) years in the Illinois Department of Corrections followed by one (1) year of Mandatory Supervised Release.

The Carbondale Police Department handled the investigation. Assistant State’s Attorney Andrew Suthard was responsible for the prosecution in this matter.
